León, Spain

Slowing traffic with a playful puzzle of color

The Project

Leon’s Asphalt Art project was installed as part of the city’s larger efforts to improve accessibility and safety at the crosswalk to the Maristas San José School on Avenida de Álvaro López Núñez, an important educational center located on one of the busiest roads in the city. A new brightly-colored crossing area indicates a pedestrian priority zone where drivers must travel at 10 kilometers per hour or less. Together with the roadway mural, a series of infrastructure improvements including lighting upgrades, the installation of new street furniture, and new bicycle parking, all aimed to reduce vehicular speed to 10 kilometers per hour and improve the overall pedestrian experience. The mural design, evocative of a jigsaw puzzle, was facilitated by artist and professor Carlos Cuenllas, who worked with Maristas students to develop ideas that were then submitted to the City Council for review and final selection.
