Harmonizing history and safety on Clifford Brown Walk

The Project

Designed by Lattisha Williams and executed by City-Designated Artist Bruce Gulick, the Clifford Brown Walk mural celebrates the legacy of jazz musician Clifford Brown while enhancing pedestrian safety and community engagement. Completed by the City of Wilmington and Cityfest, the project not only highlights Wilmington’s rich musical history but also improves traffic flow and foot traffic between 15th and 16th Street. Installed alongside enhanced programming at the nearby Urban Artist Exchange Amphitheater, the mural has made the area more inviting, encouraging greater community participation. Local residents played an active role in the design and painting process, fostering a sense of pride and ownership in their neighborhood.

The mural was a huge challenge logistically and physically but every step of the way it felt better and better to see the colors, shapes, and flow emerge. It really seems to unify the park with the UAE studios and stage. I enjoyed speaking with people passing by and hearing the many positive responses to the artwork.
